“Invisible Children: Rough Cut” is a documentary recorded in 2003 based on the experiences of three college students from San Diego (Jason Russell, Bobby Bailey, and Laren Poole) in Northern Uganda. They went to the Sudan to 'find a story,' but ended up in northern Uganda where they found thousands of people affected by the insurgency of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). The resulting story focuses on the war's effects on children, particularly child soldiers. The filmmakers have started a national tour with the film to educate people about the plight of the child soldiers. For a trailer of the film go to www.invisiblechildren.com. Cuban born and U.S. raised Director, Writer, Cinematographer, Producer, Poet and Human Rights Activist Amy Serrano has been making films for 12 years and involved in human rights since she was 12 years old. She recently shot, produced, wrote and directed the feature-length documentary film "The Sugar Babies: The Plight of the Children of Agricultural Workers on the Sugar Industry of the Dominican Republic". Composed of field recordings coupled with outside testimony, the film explores the lives of the descendants of the first Africans delivered to the island of Hispaniola for the bittersweet commodity that once ruled the world. These very same people continue to be trafficked from Haiti to the Dominican Republic to work in sugar under circumstances that can only be considered modern day slavery. Ms. Serrano serves as President of her production company Siren Studios, and enjoys the process of merging the social sciences with filmmaking, writing, and activism, using these to create awareness, understanding and hope.
Thursday, March 6, 1pm-930pm STARZ Film Center
Join filmmaker Amy Serrano for a screening of her film followed by a discussion. "Sugar Babies is, in short, brilliant -- an amazing, amazing documentary, from beginning to end. It is beautifully paced and filmed, and the issues profoundly important." -Diane Mason, HOPE Films
